Why not use some of those lovely scraps of cloth you have lying around to whip-up a handful of bookmarks you can stick inside a book your giving? You can make several in an hour and then store them with your wrapping supplies, or stick one in an envelope and send as a fun greeting card or keep them to use yourself.
Materials:
1/8 to ¼ yard of lightweight fabric
Cardstock or other heavy paper
12” of ribbon or cord
Decoupage medium
Paintbrush
Glue stick
Hole Punch
Ruler
Pencil
Instructions:
Cut your fabric to 4” X 7 ½”.
Cut a piece of heavy weight paper to 1 ¼” X 7”.
Rub glue on one side of paper.
Place the paper ¼” from left edge of wrong side of fabric. Leave
equal margins at top and bottom.
Rub glue over the paper and fold the margin across it.
Fold over remaining cloth and use hand to smooth out any wrinkles or
puckers.
Punch a hole in the middle of the bookmark about 1/2” from top edge.
Coat the bookmark with the decoupage using the paintbrush and long
strokes.
Allow one side to dry for 20 minutes before doing the other side.
Attach the ribbon or cord by feeding it through the hole and tying
with a slip knot.
Optional Decorations:
Use acrylic paint and rubber stamps to decorate fabric before gluing
onto bookmark.
Cut out smaller pieces of fabric, in desired shapes, and glue these
onto the fabric cover in the form of a collage, patchwork quilt, or
framed picture.
Glue on sequins or other flat baubles to decorate cover.
Personalize the bookmark by using a fabric pen to write the
recipient’s name or to copy a short poem or inspirational quote. |
