Vintage Travel Map Dishtowel Projects
Wednesday, 19 September 2007

This week's project tip is a trip! Those tacky tourist 'map' dishtowels and tablecloths can be turned into ultra cool pillows, book bags and yes, even skirts! Dishtowels are very inexpensive, and can be turned into great, unique souvenir gifts. On a trip to Italy, I picked up beautifully printed dishtowels for only 1 euro each, and turned them into gift bags when I got home. For easy bookbags, simply sew two dishtowels (do not have to match!) inside out, and together on three sides, and use remnant fabric to make a handle.

Ready to be adventurous and wear a travel map dishtowel or tablecloth? If you don't already have a few of these vintage map tablecloths at your home, you can find a great selection on Ebay.com

For this week's project, find a map tablecloth that is approximately 50" wide (or more). A patchwork style skirt may be made using several dishtowels.

You'll also need a spool of matching or contrasting thread, a 7-9 inch zipper, and optional items would be basting glue or tape, decorative buttons.

We recommend a standard A - line skirt. You may find a simple A-line skirt pattern at Joann's. After you sew the A line skirt together for your measurements and size, have fun and add some pockets the the front. Use remnant map dishtowels or tablecloths. The contrast, and overlapping patterns make for a beautiful and unique skirt.

Not only will you get tons of compliments on this fun skirt, but it will make you feel as if you're on vacation!
